Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

More Information

Description The new and improved Pinky Winky Prime™ panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata) boasts bigger blooms, richer color, and improved hardiness than the original Pinky Winky®. The flower color certainly doesn’t cool down come summer, with panicles transitioning from white to hot pink starting from the bottom until the flower is fully submerged in color. This panicle hydrangea is also exceptionally cold hardy, showcasing gorgeous hues and outstanding performance down to zone 3. We love planting this shrub in a sunny hedge where everyone can see the striking cone-shaped flowers.

Panicle hydrangeas are one of the easiest to grow, making them perfect for beginners. They bloom on new wood, which means they reliably flower each year (even after cold winters). All they need is a quick prune in early spring for a floriferous year! Flower color is unaffected by soil chemistry. If flowers turn brown and dry instead of aging to pink or red, the plant needs more water, or nighttime temperatures are too high for the transition.

How To Grow Soil: Adaptable to most any soil except very wet or excessively alkaline soils.

Water: Water to keep soil moist, but not wet. Intolerant of drought, so don't allow the soil to dry out.
Spacing: 6-10 feet
Fertilizing: It is generally unnecessary, but you can fertilize once in spring if soils are deficient or growth is slow.
Winterizing: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage that was infected by powdery mildew. Spread a layer of mulch around the plant for added protection.
Maintenance & pruning: In late winter or early spring, cut back by about one-third its total height, just above a set of large buds. This ensures that the growth for the season will come vigorous buds lower on the plant and also serves to remove any remaining dried blooms. Alternatively, cut back in autumn once the plant has gone completely dormant. May be cut back harder if desired, though this tends to produce stems that are unable to achieve maximum stem strength the following season.

Now, let's discuss the concepts mentioned in this article.

Pinky Winky Prime™ Panicle Hydrangea

The Pinky Winky Prime™ Panicle Hydrangea is a new and improved variety of hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata). It features bigger blooms, richer color, and improved hardiness compared to the original Pinky Winky® variety. The flower panicles of this hydrangea emerge white and transition to a hot pink color. It is salt-tolerant and performs well even in urban landscapes. At maturity, it can reach a height and width of 6-9 feet. It is suitable for zones 3-8 and requires sun or partial sun exposure [[1]].

Plant Spacing

Plant spacing refers to the distance between individual plants when planting them in a garden or landscape. The spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. It is usually given as a range, such as 3-5 feet. In colder climates or when you want the plants to fill in more quickly, it is recommended to space them at the shorter end of the range. In warmer climates, on a limited budget, or when you are willing to wait longer for the plants to touch, you can use the higher end of the range. Spacing is calculated on center, meaning the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart. Staggered or zig-zag patterns can be used for a more interesting and naturalistic look [[2]].

How to Grow Pinky Winky Prime™ Panicle Hydrangea

To grow the Pinky Winky Prime™ Panicle Hydrangea successfully, consider the following factors:

Soil: The plant is adaptable to most soil types except very wet or excessively alkaline soils.

Light: It prefers part-sun exposure, which means 4-6 hours of sun per day. Morning sun and afternoon shade are especially enjoyable for this plant.

Water: Keep the soil moist but not wet. The plant is intolerant of drought, so make sure the soil doesn't dry out.

Spacing: Plant the Pinky Winky Prime™ Panicle Hydrangea with a spacing of 6-10 feet.

Fertilizing: Fertilization is generally unnecessary, but you can fertilize once in spring if the soil is deficient or growth is slow.

Winterizing: Remove and destroy any fallen foliage infected by powdery mildew. Spread a layer of mulch around the plant for added protection.

Maintenance & Pruning: In late winter or early spring, cut back the plant by about one-third of its total height, just above a set of large buds. This promotes growth from lower buds and removes any remaining dried blooms. Alternatively, you can cut back in autumn once the plant has gone completely dormant. Harder pruning can be done if desired, but it may affect the stem strength in the following season [[3]].

These are the main concepts discussed in this article. If you have any more specific questions or need further information, feel free to ask!
