Now this sounds like an interesting role: Drivers wanted for the Harry Potter rail route! If this was actually in the Wizarding World Universe…No previous experience is required, so if you don't have experience as a train driver how can you demonstrate your suitability? Look at the key requirements of the job and highlight how they match these and evidence this through examples from previous experience. 🪄You must be over 21 years old (you can start training at 20).This would be an exception to the rule and you can add your age to your CV/cover letter or mention it in the profile, as it’s asked for in the job ad. Sadly that means Harry, Ron and Hermione can’t apply, but Hagrid could. If this is a key stipulation on the job ad and you don’t meet this requirement, don’t apply. 🪄A good communicator. Think of examples when you have conveyed important information and maintained a strong connection with your colleagues (wizards) and customers (magical creatures). Example: Created a go-to destination for all things magical pet-related by welcoming customers to the pet shop with enthusiasm, listening to requirements, providing expert and clear advice, and organising on-site information-sharing events.🪄Good problem solvingWhat riddles have you solved in previous roles, your education, or voluntary work?Example: As an apprentice wizard, saved the Whispering Willow that forest creatures relied on for protection by working with the elders to find a rare crystal that would break the curse.🪄Experience working in an equally responsible role where safety is paramount. Can you provide an example of where you have been involved in safety?Example: Executed a spectacular display of magic and a safe and memorable event as a volunteer at the village Magical Fireworks Festival by implementing safety protocols, training festival wizard staff on emergency procedures, and putting in place contingency plans. 🪄A flexible approach is vital as shift and weekend working will be required. What jobs have you done that required flexibility and/or shift work?Example: As a magical pet shop assistant, embraced a schedule that included weekend and evening shifts so could care for nocturnal owlets and off-duty wizards could buy their magical pet supplies at times convenient to them.ttps://lnkd.in/ekBnhSJw

The F WordI failed yesterday and it sucked.Outside of my work life I’m a Trainee with the North Devon Search and Rescue Team, part of Mountain Rescue England and Wales. I’ve been training with the team about 15 months and hoping in the next few months to complete my training and get ‘Badged’ earn my coveted red jacket and more importantly join the call out list so I can be a part of the team that helps people in need on Dartmoor and in the surrounding areas. As you’d expect, there are a lot of skills you must master before you can join the team on call outs such as; Navigation, Casualty care, Comms (radios), Ropes, Water safety to mention a few. When you learn these skills you need to demonstrate proficiency in lots of the techniques as well as an appreciation for their application. Last night I asked our Ropes Lead to sign off the remaining techniques on ropes as I’d been diligently practicing in my office, securing myself to various chairs, tables and anything or anyone that would stay still long enough. After seeing me perform each knot and technique, rather than signing the section of my logbook that covers ropes he started asking some practical questions about what kinds of scenarios I’d use certain techniques. At this point things started to stray from the script. After a few examples he said; “Go on then” and indicated that I set up the rig I’d just described with the now quite messy bit of rope, the Land Rover we were stood at the back of and any available upright I could find. As it turns out, the fairly fresh knowledge plus a bit of pressure and an unfamiliar environment presented more of a challenge than I expected. I worked through it all in time but it wasn’t fast or confident. In short it wasn’t good enough and I didn’t get ropes signed off. I’m confident, competitive and I set high standards for myself so I was annoyed. Partly at the assessor , partly at myself. My colleague pointed out though that if I turned up to a rescue in the dark and in bad weather (because that’s the majority of rescues) I might need to set that kind of rig up and either myself, a colleague or a casualty may rely on those knots so they better be good and they better be done quickly. There’s times when the acceptable standard absolutely must be met. Positive feedback in training and coaching are important but equally we should never be under any illusions that we meet a standard that we’re not actually achieving. Not all cases are life and death but our performance, our careers and ultimately our livelihoods rely on us meeting acceptable standards and exceeding them to thrive.Don’t rob yourself or your colleagues of the opportunity to fail. Communicate sensitively and positively describe the actions needed to achieve the standards but be clear what is expected and where people fall short.I failed last night but today and tomorrow I’ll practice. When I meet the expected standards, I’ll be able to join the team and do what I love.

Meet Des – Ergro Site SupervisorGet to know our experienced engineer and Site Supervisor – Des DaCosta, as we took 5 this week to find out a bit more about what makes this team leader tick…What was your first job?“Most people wouldn’t remember but there was a supermarket called ‘Quick Save’, a really cheap supermarket. I was working on Saturdays on a fruit and veg stall. Back then there were stalls outside the supermarket. I was even a paperboy which might have actually been my first job. I had to get up early to get peanuts for delivering them.”What made you choose Ergro?“The interview. I remember it like it was yesterday. It lasted over an hour and afterwards I walked back to my car (about 10 minutes away). By the time I got back to my car, the agency had rang me and told me I had been offered the job and that the Hiring Manager knew he was going to hire me within 2 minutes of speaking to me, he knew I was the right person for the position.”What do you like about your role?“What I like most about my role is that it helps me to keep developing my skills. It’s made me into a better person. I’m enjoying being a team leader.”What’s one hobby you’ve always wanted to try?“I had flying lessons once, quite a long time ago, but it was something I really enjoyed. I actually got to take control and fly a plane - I’m a pilot in the making!”What advice would you give younger you?“Make the most of life when you’re young, because when you get older, time flies by. So make the most of life while you’re young. All the experiences that your body can take and you can spring back. Don’t wait until it’s too late.”#meettheteam#engineerslife#peopleandculture
